From Environmental Challenges to Economic Opportunities
A Conversation with World Bank Group Global Director for Environment and Climate
The webinar will feature Global Director for Environment at the World Bank Group Dr. Valerie Hickey (previously Global Director for Climate). Coming from Biodiversity (October 2026) and Climate (November 2026) COPs, Valerie will provide an update on these global fora and discuss opportunities to address key environmental and climate challenges at international, national and local levels. She will particularly focus on the role of nature as the foundational technology that enables growth and job creation. She will further discuss the role of environmental action in driving innovation and a growing importance of private sector and local initiatives against the backdrop of increasingly constrained international development landscape. Her presentation will be followed by discussion.

Valerie Hickey is the Director for Environment at the World Bank Group. In this role, she leads a global team that leverages data, knowledge, and partnerships to ensure that the WBG’s public and private sector investments in nature, natural resource management, pollution management, and the circular economy generate more and better jobs, in more places, putting another nail in the coffin of poverty. This work centers on scaling proven solutions to achieve greater impact and to build a better future for communities, companies, and countries.
